BA (Hons) English Literature

• A Level: Must include passes at A2 in at least one subject.
• International Baccalaureate: Diploma with 26 points including a minimum of 15 points at Higher Level.
• Other equivalent qualifications recognised by the university.

Note: We would normally expect you to have Grade C in GCSE English and Maths.

English Language Requirements:

• Overall IELTS score of 5.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking (or recognised equivalent).

Over your three-year course, we want to give you a consistently rewarding learning experience – one that is exciting, challenging and thought-provoking. Our course is structured around the emergence of the modern world and the shifting perspectives that accompany this transformation.

In your first year we’ll introduce you to a variety of approaches to studying literature at degree level, followed in the second year by a chronological exploration of British literature from Shakespearean sonnets through to emerging contemporary literature.

You’ll also have the opportunity to explore writing from other national traditions and, should you choose to, you can take optional modules in creative writing, history or film as part of your degree.

Your final year includes modules that look in depth at some of the most significant movements and moments in 20th and 21st century literature. 

We’ll support and guide you as you develop, research and write a dissertation. This independent research project focuses on an area you want to explore further.
