The culmination activity of International Week at the Lakeside campus was the hosting to the UN Day @ Taylor’s University for the very first time. Held in conjunction with the United Nations’ 70th anniversary, the UN Day @ Taylor’s University activity featured two key components of the SHINE (2nd transcript) Award Programme’s Empowerment Series under "Global Engagement". The day began with a Parade of the Nations as international students marched into the hall with the flag of their respective countries. Then, Ms. Michelle Gyles-McDonnough, the UN Resident Coordinator for Malaysia, opened the event by delivering her opening address on behalf of the United Nations. In the morning, and as part of the SHINE Distinguished Speaker Series, the Keynote Address on "Malaysia in a Global Community" was delivered by YAM Tunku Zain Al-'Abidin ibni Tuanku Muhriz (Founding President of the Institute of Democracy and Economic Affaires). In the afternoon, a Global Perspectives Seminar on the "Condition of Human Rights in Malaysia" featured both Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir (member of the Board for Sister of Islam) and Mr. Steven Chan (Founder of Malaysian Glaucoma Society and Dialogue in the Dark, Malaysia). Throughout the day a competition for Global F.A.C.E.s: For-A-Cause Exhibits was also held. This was a platform for various groups of students to create interactive exhibits that highlight various global issues. Nine groups participated in the competition including those highlighting corruption, pollution, human trafficking and so forth.
