In a world increasingly affected by climate change, the pursuit of innovative solutions is more critical than ever. Dr Rabita Mohd Firdaus, researcher from Sunway University, has recently gained international recognition as one of the winners of the Make Our Planet Great Again (MOPGA) 2024 initiative, an initiative launched by French President Emmanuel Macron. This prestigious programme invites leading scientists from around the globe to relocate their climate research to France, further solidifying the country's commitment to combating global warming. Out of 282 applicants from 29 countries, 53 were selected.
As the sole Malaysian representative among the 53 laureates globally, Dr. Rabita's selection is a testament to her groundbreaking work and the significant impact of her research. She will conduct her project, titled “Sustainable Strategy to Address the Environmental Impact of Climate Change,” at the Institut Jean Lamour (IJL) at University of Lorraine France, in collaboration with the Research Centre for Carbon Dioxide Capture and Utilisation (CCDCU) at Sunway University. Dr. Rabita's research focuses on the innovative use of nanofluids as potential carbon dioxide (CO2) absorbents.
By exploring how these advanced fluids can enhance CO2 capture systems, she aims to reduce energy costs associated with carbon capture technologies. This research is particularly timely, given the urgent need for effective strategies to mitigate the effects of climate change.
In France, Dr. Rabita will collaborate with various academic teams across Europe, sharing insights and resources to advance her research. Her work promises to contribute significantly to the development of sustainable practices that could transform how we approach carbon emissions.
Dr. Rabita's achievement not only highlights her exceptional talents but also underscores the role of Sunway University in the global scientific community. By fostering innovative research that addresses pressing environmental issues, the University is positioned as a key player in the fight against climate change.
Enhancing the understanding of climate change is crucial for guiding decision-makers and facilitating the development of effective, sustainable solutions. Besides, the participation of young researchers is invaluable for international collaboration, representing the future of knowledge in our world. Initiatives like MOPGA enable the global community to come together in the battle against climate change, promoting a greener planet for future generations.
