Entry Requirements

  • A-levels: For those applying with A-levels only, grades ABB are expected, supported by a strong portfolio.
  • BTEC: DDD.
  • International Baccalaureate: 34.
  • Access to HE diploma: pass with 60 credits overall. Art and design diploma preferred. At least 45 credits at level 3, with 30 credits at merit or above.
  • GCSE (minimum grade C): a good profile.

English Language Requirement:

  • IELTS 6.0 overall, with 6.0 in writing and at least 5.5 in the other elements.

Curriculum

Year 1

In the first year, core study modules in studio practice aim to develop material-specific skills and introduce fundamental ideas of design and craft.

Through rotations of four material areas (wood, metal, ceramics, polymers and composites) students are introduced to the processes and techniques of design and making. This is followed by a short period of self-directed study or a design project.

Within these rotations, concept development, context and the surrounding discussion on design and craft are led by overarching themes and project briefs increasing in depth of critical engagement, for example:

culture of making – traditions
consumption – resources and environment
technology – materials and performance
object and context – body, space and site.
Studio practice is integrated with a creative enquiry module introducing research methods in creative practice and delivering skills in visual communication, design development (drawing, representation, studio techniques such as technical drawing, model making, digital image and layout skills).

The first year programme is also supported by modules in professional practice and historical and critical studies.

Year 2

In year 2, students focus on specialisation and choice in materials and processes progressing their individual practice through a combination of research-led, issue-driven and live projects.

The aim is to develop advanced and in-depth knowledge from the materials base connecting historical and traditional techniques and processes to contemporary culture and innovation. Structured projects combined with live and research-led projects contribute to the formulation of personal development plans and research questions for the self-directed study and independent project work in year 3. Studio practice is supported by modules in professional practice and historical and critical studies. Students also have the opportunity to take a 20-credit option from across the College of Arts and Humanities.

After year 2, BA(Hons) students may wish to transfer onto the MDes. To achieve this, they must attain a minimum 60% grade overall in the second year.

In year 2 you have the opportunity to apply for a student exchange to Nagoya University and Seoul National University.

Final year

Year 3 supports the development and management of independent learning.

MDes students undertake an independent body of work in 3D design and craft supported by a rigorous body of creative enquiry research to articulate their critical framework for the core study at the next level, including a historical and critical studies written text and the presentation of a thesis proposal for the final year, and a professional practice portfolio and preparation for work placement.

At masters level, students undertake a work placement, a self-directed studio practice master module and an masters-level module chosen from our arts and humanities portfolio.

This level of study brings to the realisation the range of learned creative, research and vocational skills. This is coupled with a demonstrable command of design and craft fabrication skills in the production of original work that responds to professional experiences gained through the work placement and creative ambitions.

As an MDes student you will benefit from an industrial placement and work-related learning with opportunities to develop vocational skills and knowledge. You will complete a work placement which will enable you to apply business theory and professional practice skills within associated industries.

The MDes provides an effective bridge to postgraduate and doctoral study as well as helping to build links and research opportunities with industry.
